The planetary boundaries framework provides science-based targets that define a safe operating space for humanity. I will introduce the origins and evolution of the framework, including its most recent developments before discussing how planetary boundaries relate to Earth system tipping points and how both are intended to help avoid destabilizing transitions in the Earth system. Finally, I will summarize the implications of crossing planetary boundaries and tipping points for Earth resilience.
